The Owner-Operator Discipline Guide

This guide explains the Trucking Made Simple™ standard: what to measure, why it matters, and how to protect profit, time, and sustainability.

What This Is

Trucking Made Simple™ is not accounting software. It is a discipline system.

Most drivers know what a load pays. Few know what it truly costs. This guide exists to replace guessing with clarity.

The Core Problem in Trucking

Without true cost, drivers confuse revenue with profit. Deadhead is ignored. Return miles are forgotten. Wait time goes undocumented. Fuel gets guessed. And the real cost — time away from family — goes unmeasured.

Hard work isn’t the issue. Lack of clarity is.

The Rule That Changes Everything

Revenue does not matter. Profit does.

A “big rate” can still lose money. A lower rate can still be profitable. Only disciplined math tells the truth.

What Must Be Measured (Every Load)

If it moves the truck, it costs money.

Every mile counts. Every hour counts.

O.T.R.A.F.F — The Real Metric

O.T.R.A.F.F stands for On The Road Away From Family.

It measures: Net revenue ÷ total hours away.

This is not “per driving hour.” It’s per hour of life spent away. Time is the only non‑renewable asset in trucking.

How to Use the System

Before accepting a load:

  1. Open Scenario.
  2. Enter revenue, deadhead miles, loaded miles, return miles, and fuel price.
  3. Review the bottom line, hours away, and O.T.R.A.F.F.
  4. Accept only what meets your standard.
Decisions are made before acceptance — not after damage.

Final Principle

If you do not control your numbers, your numbers control you.
